July 2008 — VOLUME 6 ISSUE 7 Recycling incentives save dollars In an effort to reduce the huge environmental and economic impact from residential garbage, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) has introduced its Recycle Now program due to get under way in January 2009. Under its Solid Waste Management Plan the TNRD will implement garbage tipping fees and region-wide recycling at most transfer stations and landfills in the region. Peter Hughes, director of environmental services for the TNRD says the new system is all about reducing the amount of garbage and increasing recycling opportunities throughout the whole TNRD. "Recycle Now has two parts," says Hughes. "First by popular demand, recycling bins are being added to most area transfer stations and landfills over the next six months and you'll be able to start recycling a wide range of materials. The second part of the program introduces pay-as-you-throw garbage services that give everyone the opportunity to control how much they pay for waste disposal." Hughes includes there will be a $1 fee per bag of garbage, starting in January, but recycling can be done at no additional cost. "The more you recycle, the less you'll pay for your garbage," he says. In addition the TNRD has implemented a new tipping fee schedule for Demolition, Land Clearing and Construction waste (DLC) at all TNRD landfills starting July 1.
