April 2008 — VOLUME 6 ISSUE 4 Polish up those golf shoes For some people, the sign of melting snow and emerging green sadly means the end of their winter season, but for others a whole new season is starting up. The Graham Cooke designed golf course at Sun Peaks Resort, is scheduled to open May 17. While many people are winding down after a great ski season, the golf course crew has been hard at work getting the course ready for opening day. "We're clearing greens off, getting them growing and tarping [the greens] to keep them alive," says Keith Lyall, superintendent of the Sun Peaks Golf Course. According to Bob Duncan, head golf professional at Sun Peaks, there are a few new things in the works such as a food and beverage station located near the third hole. This food stand will be accessible via several different holes on the golf course and Duncan says they're trying to pin down a theme to attach to it. There'll also be new mid-week (Mon. to Fri.) golf packages available for a discounted price, golf lessons, and a ladies only lesson series. On the golf course maintenance side, Lyall says they'll be undertaking such things as clearing underbrush and pine beetle tree management creating a more open course layout. "We're going to try to open up the bush this year and get rid of some of the underbrush, thinning it out so that if a ball does go in [to the bush] there may be an opportunity to go find it," says Lyall. "With the pine beetle infestation it's really opening up our forests so we try to take advantage of that, getting rid of the trees and maybe open it up so at least you can go and find your ball and play it out." Both Lyall and Duncan note the fact that the resort is still in its growing stages will only mean good things to come for the golf course. "Once the resort gets more established, the golf course is going to become better and more playable every year," says Duncan. Site designed and maintained by: PeaksMedia.com | |
