January 2008 — VOLUME 6 ISSUE 1 An appealing thought
Whether you’re hosting a family gathering, a dinner date with friends or just want an intimate evening for two in the comfort of your own home, Appeal Catering will bring it all to you—the only finger you have to lift is the one to dial the phone number. Appeal Catering was formed last year by Kamloops resident Joanna Yatzko after, she says, she saw a need at Sun Peaks for her experienced catering services. “Sun Peaks is growing and the service industry has to grow with it,” she says. She describes that her company fills the void for visitors to Sun Peaks who want something different—to be catered to in the comfort of their accommodations, particularly if they’ve already been to a few of the restaurants in the village, she says. “They spend lots of money on a chalet and they don’t want to leave it,” Yatzko says. “So they hire me to bring the restaurant to them.” Currently Yatzko is keeping very busy with a visiting Australian ski racing team from Mount Hotham, Australia, who are part of the International Racers organization—an independent alpine training academy supporting the ambitions of those who want to race and train. Manager of the team, Jeff Books, claims Yatzko came highly recommended to him when the team was looking for a chef—her name kept coming up, he says. The ski-racing team, made up of approximately 20, 12 to 15-year-olds, will spend time at the resort until mid-January and are to return again in March. While they are here Yatzko will be spending a lot of time in the team’s kitchen cooking up a storm to keep them well fed, but she doesn’t mind because as well as creating a variety of home cooked dishes for her clients, she says she enjoys the personal contact with her customers just as much. “It’s like a party, an interactive dinner. It’s like a cooking class and most people treat me as an extension of their vacation,” she explains, including that she cooks everything fresh onsite. Her most extravagant task was for a wedding when she prepared 26 wedding cakes—one for each table, coated in a special type of chocolate she had to learn to make from scratch. “I had to coat all of them in this thin layer of what’s called chocolate plastic—milk chocolate, white chocolate and dark chocolate,” Yatzko says. “I basically had to learn and teach myself all about chocolate just to make that cake.” Yatzko is passionate about what she does and says it’s an experience anyone can enjoy—they get to see everything and then keep all the leftovers. “You don’t have to worry about anything which makes the whole experience more enjoyable,” she notes.
