September 2007 — VOLUME 5 ISSUE 9 Local twins hold winning hand with matching pair
It was the best moment of her life when Teresa Gibbon discovered she was expecting twins. Sitting in her cozy home close to Sun Peaks, nursing her tiny twin boys, Teresa’s face lights up as she describes how she felt after being told the news she’d wanted to hear since she was a little girl. “When we found out we were having twins, I was just ecstatic,” she claims. It’s a dream many would balk at, but for Teresa and her husband of eight years, Kai, it’s always been their wish to have their children growing up just as they both did—with a twin sibling. “Growing up having a best friend—someone to play with, is such a special relationship and I really wanted my children to have that,” explains Teresa, who has an identical sister. Kai, a fraternal twin, notes many people try having their kids close together in age and twins, he says are the ultimate in that respect. The odds against a twin marrying a twin and then conceiving twins are likely more than a million to one, but as far as this couple is concerned they hit the jackpot. Giving birth though to twins came as a big surprise to everyone. “The obstetrician was really surprised that I was having twins because there are no fraternal twins in my line or family—it was a pure fluke of nature,” explains Teresa. Despite the torrent of negative comments and gasps of shock encountered when they announced their news, the Gibbons remained excited. Teresa says she pinched herself every day because she couldn’t believe how lucky they were to be having twins. Kai adds that they were prepared for a tough time after the twins were born, but fortunately, he says, it’s been easier than they thought. “We heard all of the nightmare stories about having twins and everybody was saying it’s going to be so hard,” Kai remembers. “We’re quite surprised that it’s not as nightmarish as we expected it to be. That’s a big relief.” Like all parents, sleep deprivation is their biggest complaint. They’ve gotten used to changing 16 diapers a day and getting stopped in every aisle at the grocery store by people admiring their babies, and they have their routine down pat. They’re settling into family life and make having twins look easy—to them it must be, because they’ve got their hearts set on yet more twins in the future, this time girls. “I feel a bit greedy asking for more twins, but if we get twin girls that would be amazing, so special,” confirms Teresa, who radiates with joy as she looks down at Luca and Jakobi. Maybe history will repeat itself and present them with another set of twins, making it a dream come true times two—or is that four?—for the Gibbons. Site designed and maintained by: PeaksMedia.com |
