Benefit takes aim at new health centre

Come out and show off your swing, mingle and join in a day of friendly competition for a great cause at the 11th Annual Nancy Greene Golf Benefit, held on the Sun Peaks Resort Golf Course Aug. 17.

Teams from all over B.C. and, of course, Sun Peaks, will be on the course at 12:30 p.m. for a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start, to spend a day in the sun and work on their game. In previous years there have been as many as 140 golfers participating in the tournament, in teams of four.

As the tournament’s played in a scramble format, don’t worry if it’s been awhile since your last visit to the greens. The best shot from one of your team members is the keeper. Melanie Smith, who is helping to coordinate the event, says it’s a great way to practice, get tips, and have some good laughs with your competitors and teammates.

“I think that the players really enjoy our event because it’s a fun day where they can meet new people, have some good-natured competition for prizes, enjoy some wonderful food and beverages on the course and at the event banquet, all in the name of a great cause,” explains Smith.

All proceeds from the Nancy Greene Golf Benefit go to the Sun Peaks Health Association (SPHA) to assist with ongoing costs and in funding a new building.

“Last year we raised over $28,000 and we hope to meet or beat that this year,” Smith notes.

The SPHA hopes to build a new health centre in three to four years. Currently the Sun Peaks Health Centre is housed in a trailer near Bento’s Day Lodge and is run by a team of volunteers.

“About $10,000 [of the funds raised] will go to operating costs and the remainder will go to a capital reserve for a new building,” says John Hatchett, president of the Sun Peaks Health Association.

After the event, participants are invited to the Delta Sun Peaks for banquet and awards, which will start at 6:30 p.m.

Swing your clubs for a good cause. There’s still room to register your team. The cost to enter is $170 per person, four people to a team, and extra dinner tickets are available for $50 each.
