Throw down at The Garden

FEBRUARY 2007 — VOLUME 5 ISSUE 2

Big air, bigger tricks, and fun for all is what’s on the agenda for the afternoon of Feb. 18 when Oronge Board Shop hosts The Garden.

The giant park jam will bring together the best riders at Sun Peaks as well as some fresh faces for a two-and-a-half hour event, the first of two being held this season.

Greg Govett, events coordinator for Sun Peaks Resort Corporation explains The Garden is not a competition, although prizes will be awarded for style, effort, crowd favourite and other categories. “We hope to show off the newly-designed terrain park as well as work with Oronge to bring a fun event to the hill that will focus on not only riders and skiers displaying their tricks, but the development of beginners as well,” says Govett.

Kent Thiessen, part-owner of Oronge Board Shop, says Oronge sponsors events like The Garden to push members of the snowboard community to perform at a higher level. He’s looking forward to seeing all the participants and how they’ll perform.

“We feel that in order for snowboarding to grow we need to feed it and stoke it for the kids through snowboarding events,” explains Thiessen. “We want to give back to the snowboard community that supports us all year long.”

Thiessen is also excited about the next Garden event in March. He hopes that events like this one will become traditions at Sun Peaks, something that riders can look forward to every year. Thiessen anticipates a good showing Feb. 18.

“The people that will ride in the event will be mainly high school kids from around our area, but we have a bunch of old-school locals who will definitely be there to push the youngsters with their explosive riding styles,” Thiessen says.

Sun Peaks will also be hosting Park Wars, two one-day events scheduled for March 10 and 18. For more information on The Garden or Park Wars, contact 250-578-5542.
