Local skiers racing towards winter

As the weather makes a break for winter, athletes who thrive on snow begin counting down the days to the season ahead.

While most of us are curling up in the warmth of our homes, local ski racers Wictoria Glowczynski and Elle Terwiel are undertaking vigorous training schedules, getting into tip-top condition for peak performances on the race circuit this winter.

The upcoming season is an important one for Glowczynski, who’s making a comeback after more than a year’s hiatus from racing after suffering a knee injury. Glowczynski tore her ACL and meniscus in 2005—recovery took 10 months and last winter saw her finally getting back on snow for rehabilitation.

“This is my comeback year and I want to show everyone that I’m a force to be reckoned with,” Glowczynski says about her goals this season, showing she has more than enough grit and determination to achieve a solid season on the race course this winter. “With the long hours I put in to be as fit as possible and all the miles put in during ski camp [this summer] I hope this winter will bring success.”

Glowczynski has spent the summer training at the invitation of the Women’s B.C. Alpine Ski Team and she’s also putting in some intense on-snow training in Chile this fall before heading back to Panorama Mountain Resort to train with the team until Christmas. Evaluations then will determine the B.C. team for this winter—a team Glowczynski hopes to be named to.

While Glowczynski is being put through her paces to prove she has what it takes to ski for B.C., Terwiel’s also been hitting the training slopes hard. This summer she became a member of the 2010 Acceleration Team—an A-list of top women who are considered high-potential athletes. The aim is to prime them for intense national and international competitions and ultimately to make them into medal winners during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Terwiel says summer training like the rigorous program she went through this year puts the athletes in good stead to face the heat on the winter race circuit.

“Summer training’s important because it’s one of the only times athletes get to work continuously on their technique instead of racing—athletes actually have time to improve their skiing,” confirms Terwiel.

Terwiel’s hoping to make the grade and qualify to ski for the Acceleration Team this winter. If she’s not one of the chosen few, she’ll be back with the B.C. Team and possibly her counterpart Glowczynski.

Both girls seem to be in fine form as they head towards the starting gate this season—driven by ambition they’ll no doubt deliver a series of solid finishes and record times—watch this space!
