Race track demons

AUGUST 2006 — VOLUME 4 ISSUE 8

Kamloops-based RZ Cascar Racing Team had a bumpy couple of weekends during the latter part of July at the Sun Valley Speedway near Vernon, and in their first road race experience at the Griddly HEADZ 100 in Edmonton.

The team was ready for Sun Valley’s Castrol 300 challenge and had strong hopes for a top-10 finish. But these were dashed as Jason White’s #21 Zimmer-Wheaton Monte Carlo was clipped by a slower car, sending White and his crew to the pit for repairs which saw them drop 25 laps. Once back in the field it became obvious that the car was not handling as it should. With three further pit stops White was able to finish the race, albeit in a disappointing 26th place.

Five days of preparation and travel had the RZ Team stoked for their first road race course at the Griddly HEADZ 100 in Edmonton but the best-laid plans can go awry.

The team had a transmission fail in the first qualifying session and blew up a motor during lap two of the main event.

However, White was able to channel his disappointment about the team’s 36th place finish in their first race at a road course.

“We really just went to Edmonton looking for an experience, and we sure got one—even if it’s one we’d like to forget,” White commented.

The RZ Racing Team will now regroup for races in Saskatoon Aug. 5, Wetaskiwin, Alta., Aug. 19, Sun Valley Sept. 2 and 3, and the final race back in Saskatoon Sept. 23.
