Summer Spectacular

AUGUST 2006 — VOLUME 4 ISSUE 8

This summer journey into Mother Nature’s workshop and experience her handiwork at Sun Peaks. Throughout August, the hills are rich with flora and fauna waiting to be discovered by hikers and bikers. Vibrant Indian Paintbrush and luscious Fireweed explode with a kaleidoscope of other blossoms on the upper slopes of the Crystal Bowl. These are alpine blossoms at their finest, and they’re one of Sun Peaks star attractions.

The summer months bring long days and warm temperatures—the perfect mix for exploring the mountain. Hop aboard the Sunburst Express and you’re whisked away to a rugged paradise. Once you reach the top, the options appear limitless. Grab a map and a walking stick and forge through forest groves. Lace up some hiking boots for a heart-pumping jaunt up the mountain. Or take an easy stroll around the Sunburst Lodge. Guided tours are available for all levels and ages, and each will reward you with breathtaking views and fields full of flowers. For the more independent-minded, just take a map and hit the trail.

Sun Peaks Alpine Blossom Festival, on this year until August 13, is the best time to see the wide variety of flowers that bloom on the mountain. Many species flower all summer long, which means no matter when you come you’ll be rewarded for your hiking efforts.

After your hike, take some time to enjoy the plethora of events that have sprung up to complement the blooms. Live music and local performers provide the score for the buzzing village, alive with food, art and visitors. Relax your tired muscles and recap your adventure on one of the village’s many outdoor patios.

For those of you who come late in the month and miss the blossom prime time, worry not—you can still experience amazing mountain colour. Catch the last chair and watch the sun set on the Coastal Range Mountains.
