| What if ... Ullr was a girl? NOVEMBER 2006 — VOLUME 4 ISSUE 11 It seems after thousands of years of having a male of the species represent Ullr, the Norwegian god of snow, things are about to change. Whistler Blackcomb has started a contest to find the perfect Ullr girl. The contest, coined “If Ullr was a girl” is searching North America-wide for the girl who best represents Ullr culture. Not just about riding or skiing ability, it’s also about attitude, competitiveness and being the hottest Ullr chick out there. Contestants are voted for online by family, friends or admirers with the top six vote-getters being whisked to Whistler for the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival in April. Once there, girls will compete on and off the slopes to be named Ullr girl. With so many great women rippers out there the contest is broken into two classes, Amateur and Open. In the Open class for professional and sponsored sliders only, the ladies will battle it out for a grand prize of $25,000 while the Amateur ladies will be competing for a package of choice swag including gear, movie roles and a Whistler/Blackcomb season’s pass. Sun Peaks’ own Angie Seeley has her eyes set on the title of Ullr girl. Born and raised in Kamloops, Angie’s all about riding and rippin’ it up. Not one to settle for hanging with the boys, Seeley thinks this contest is great for all the girls who ski and ride. “I found it surfing the web and thought it was cool. It gets us all out there instead of riding with the guys all the time. You can ride with a bunch of girls that push each other,” comments Seeley. Seeley lives to ride and can’t wait for the snow to fly. Having ridden at Sun Peaks for the last eight years she’s clear on what Ullr life is all about and what it takes to be an Ullr girl. “It’s about friends, nature, being active, progression, and lifestyle. I love shredding pow, learning tricks, riding with friends, and of course living in a sweet resort community! Not many people in Sun Peaks don’t know who Ullr is, we all get together for Ullr parties and board burnings,” enthuses Seeley. From the level of Seeley’s passion it looks like the other 230 girls who’ve also entered the contest have some stiff competition. So far, only one other Sun Peaks girl has entered. Emma Whitman, a hardcore park rider from Kamloops, is also going for it, having entered the Amateur category. The 17-year-old has skied Sun Peaks for five years and to her it’s all about getting out there and doing it. “The ultimate Ullr girl is someone who loves the outdoors and gets out there everyday to enjoy themselves,” comments Whitman.
