| Macker's makes you feel at home NOVEMBER 2006 — VOLUME 4 ISSUE 11 It’s a very rare occasion if you visit Macker’s and don’t see one of the McDonnell brothers whipping up something in the kitchen or standing behind the bar chatting with guests. Scott, Craig and Kent McDonnell are partners in Sun Peaks’ oldest independent restaurant, Macker’s on the Mountain Bar and Bistro. Scott McDonnell describes Macker’s as the “Cheers” of Sun Peaks—a place where everybody knows your name. Guests are truly the focus at Macker’s—their pictures line the walls, their influence shows in the menu, and they’re known by name to the McDonnells and their staff. “We have return customers year after year . . . they come back to see us. We’ve made an impression on them and of course they make an impression on us. We pride ourselves on remembering people’s names. When you come in [to Macker’s] you’re not a table number,” says Scott. Guest focus isn’t the only thing that makes Macker’s so successful. A varied menu with fresh ingredients, a wide range of options and a touch of international influence is what keeps guests coming back. The menu changes each season, bringing new flavours into the restaurant every few months. The brothers are always open to suggestions and even have guests help them develop the taste. “I’m not going to do the traditional deep-fried calamari,” says Scott. “For the person who was bugging me about [not having calamari on the menu] we made it five different times until he liked the flavour. So this year we have a pan-seared Thai calamari with a little sun-dried tomato and seared with Pernod.” The McDonnells are also very active in the Sun Peaks community. Macker’s sponsors many of the sporting events at Sun Peaks, including the Leo Baggio Charity Golf Classic and the FIS World Cup of Speed Skiing. The restaurant also hosts a number of popular events throughout the year, including a lively New Year’s countdown, a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner and the mountain’s best Super Bowl party. Whether you’re looking for some comfort food like Scotty Mac’s World Famous Barbecue Baby Back Ribs, or you want to try something off the new tapas menu, the Mackers boys will make you feel like you’re right at home at Sun Peaks.
