| Take the Embelton Challenge NOVEMBER 2006 — VOLUME 4 ISSUE 11 Panoramic views of Heffley Lake encircled by the numerous mountains adjoining the Sun Peaks region and an excellent workout are the rewards for reaching the peak of the Embelton Mountain Trail. Located along Tod Mountain Road about 20 minutes west of Sun Peaks, Embelton Mountain Trail has two main entrances, west and east. The first, located about 100 metres past Heffley Lake Road is the fastest but not the easiest way to the top. There are several routes that can be followed to the peak—the shortest trek is approximately eight kilometres, about a three-hour round trip. There are also a great number of shorter loops for those who wish a more leisurely hike. The trails are easy to follow, exposing the hiker to diverse landscapes from steep mountainous terrain to open meadows. The hike is challenging but worth the effort. The trailhead to the east entrance can be accessed across the road from the Heffley Lake Forestry Recreation site and offers a vast range of trails for both hikers and mountain bikers. Trails are well-indicated and maps are located at most intersections. On Sept. 26, 2006 Tourism, Sport and Arts Minister Stan Hagen announced that $1 million would be invested to upgrade and maintain recreation sites and trails around the province. On the list of sites to be upgraded is Embelton Mountain Trail, currently a user-maintained trail. “Every year, more than two million residents and visitors take advantage of our vast network of forests recreation sites and trails,” said Hagen. “While about half are maintained through contracts and partnership agreements, the remainder are largely maintained by users. This additional $1 million will help maintain this vital asset for the enjoyment of all who love the outdoor experience.” The agenda for Embelton includes replacement or restoration of worn-out picnic tables and any other structures in need of repair, as well as trail clearing. Marc White and his wife Natasha of Kamloops enjoy the breathtaking views of Heffley Lake and the Thompson Valley the trail presents. “This trail is one of my favourite in the region,” Marc says. “You feel very small in front of this overwhelming scenery. I know it sounds cliché, but it’s really like being on top of the world.” Natasha admits that the last kilometre to the lookout is quite difficult but gives you a great workout. “The last part of the hike is very demanding physically. It’s extremely steep and it gives you a bit of vertigo when looking down,” she says. “It’s an awesome way to get in shape before the ski season. Your legs feel like jelly when you finally get back down.” This time of year is perfect for a hike. The air is fresh, wildlife viewing at its best and there’s no better way to get physically fit for the upcoming ski and snowboard season. So go on, put on those hiking boots, fill up your water bottle and take the Embelton Mountain challenge! Site designed and maintained by: PeaksMedia.com |
