![]() If there’s a winter sport that celebrates the pursuit of fitness for all ages, while giving its participants a first-hand account of the beauty of nature, it’s cross-country skiing. A cross-country skier can enjoy watching their breath mingle with the cool, crisp air while taking in the magical, snowy, mountainous views reserved for postcards. In other words, it’s an outdoor enthusiasts dream. They can ski at their own pace, not one set by the slopes of the mountain. People who partake in this energetic outdoor pursuit are eclectic, as are their reasons for enjoying the sport. “I’ve been a longtime cross-country skier,” said Phil Youwe. He has been involved in the activity for the past quarter of a century. “It’s a lifetime sport.” Youwe described the constant movement involved with the sport as a positive benefit. “There’s no standing around in cross-country skiing,” said Youwe. The quick learning curve of the sport, means those who are new to it can fall in love with it right away. Alyse Passmore has only skied once before, but remembers the initial experience fondly. “The trails at Sun Peaks are beautiful and there’s nothing better than getting out in the fresh air to try something new,” she said. “I ended up soaked and cold, but believe it or not, I had a good time.” There are green trails available for beginners and novice levels. The trails consist of mainly flat terrain, with soft curves. Sun Peaks also offers blue trails, which may have more hills and sharper curves. Fanatics will find over 15 kilometres of more terrain to enjoy at the resort this winter. Carly Sibbald, who has been assisting with the progress to the trails, estimated that the resort contains over 32-km of groomed tracks. “I’m a cross-country skier, so I get to enjoy it,” said Sibbald of the improvements made. Sibbald enjoys the flexibility of the exercise. “You can do it anytime of day.” Over recent years this wintertime sport has received an increase in interest in North America. More and more people are enjoying the workout in the fresh air surrounded by spectacular scenery. Passmore is excited about the growth possibilities for cross-country skiing and believes it’s becoming the new trendy winter hobby. “Cross-country skiing will be all the rage. Give it a year or so and people will be trading in their snowboards, just you wait.” |
