POSTED: 9 January, 2009 Comics entertain to full house
Masa’s Bar and Grill at Sun Peaks Resort welcomed a full house on Wednesday evening where three Canadian comedians took to the stage. The “Snowed In Comedy Tour”, a group of internationally renowned comedians, are making their rounds at venues across B.C. and Alberta. Sun Peaks’ local and self-proclaimed funny man Chris Nowak got the crowd’s laughing gear in order prior to welcoming the three acts; Peter Johansson, Glenn Wool and Dan Quinn. Due to British Columbia’s wild winter weather, two of the scheduled international comedians were unable to make an appearance. “I would like to thank Dan Quinn for the effort to bring in such a great act given the weather limitations,” said Bill Duncan, manager at Masa’s Bar and Grill. Aside from the stereotypical “ski resort” based jokes on marijuana and bad ski etiquette, the comics spurred several moments of full house laughter from the packed crowd. Sun Peaks local Angie Delainey, attending her first comedy show at a ski resort welcomed some of the Mary Jane slanted humour. “Two out of the three were pretty funny if you like dirty humour. The marijuana jokes were also pretty funny, a little bit overdone, but all in all they were pretty funny,” said Delainey. “I would totally go again,” she added. Masa’s is no stranger to comedy festivals, regularly holding events during the winter season, and Duncan was extremely pleased with last night’s turn out. “We’ve done bi-weekly comedy previously and last season we went to weekly. We found that spacing the comedy out though gave us a more anticipated show and a better buzz in the resort,” says Duncan. Fans of comedy nights can expect more conviviality this season as Masa’s intends to work with some local comedians as well as other featured acts from the Laugh Shop. “I anticipate one more show (this season) and maybe a second show before the season ends,” says Duncan. Masa’s is the entertainment destination this season with four more fun-filled evenings on the schedule over the next month, the first being a 1920s themed event which ties in with the upcoming Ice Wine Festival. “(On Saturday, Jan. 17) Misconduct Wine Co. is hosting a Prohibition Party where Masa’s will be transformed into a “speakeasy”. The servers, entertainers (Luther Wright and Po Girl) and members of the winery will dress in a roaring 20s theme,” said Duncan. Guests are also encouraged to dress the part in their finest 20s attire. Tickets for the event are $20 which includes wine samples, appetizers and specially priced Misconduct wines by the glass or bottle. The ever popular BC/DC, an AC/DC tribute band who’ve rocked Masa’s several times in the past, will play Friday and Saturday evening Jan. 23 and 24. Duncan says he books BC/DC over other tribute bands simply because they’re the best tribute band he’s heard. “People can expect to close their eyes and picture themselves listening to AC/DC themselves. They’re high energy and loud. I’ve yet to be disappointed by their show,” said Duncan. A reggae weekend will take place on Feb. 6 and 7 to mark reggae great Bob Marley’s birthday and will feature local Kamloops reggae band Cuya. And on Feb. 12 Vancouver artist CR Avery will perform.
